Moore, 16, received unanimous approval from the Lewisboro Town Board for his work at its Monday meeting.
The proposed improvements including adding a kiosk at one trail head and a directional sign at another, Moore said.
An existing trail head is near an upper parking lot above a baseball field, Moore told the board.
“It’s often overlooked and it’s really a beautiful trail," he said.
They also involve building a bridge over a space that experiences intermittent water flow, along with placement of check dams on a trail section to stop erosion.
A check dam involves digging a hole in the ground and putting wood in to serve as an obstruction for water, Moore said to the board.
Moore also proposes to post signage warning not to walk on a trail portion in order to combat erosion.
The existing trail in Town Park, which is in South Salem, is connected to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. However, Moore said that it's not widely known that there is a connection. As part of his project, Moore is seeking to install signage pointing to the reservation.
Moore, who is a member of Vista Troop 101 and is a junior at John Jay High School, has until his 18th birthday to complete his project, which gives him about a year and two months. He hopes to start work when the snow melts and estimates that it will take about two months, although he cautioned that the duration depends on how many volunteers he gets and on the weather.
The aspiring Eagle Scout anticipates that fellow troop members will help out, along with friends. Moore also plans to solicit local businesses supply donations and to raise funds if there if there are remaining costs.
George Scott, a member of the town's Open Space and Preserves Advisory Committee, agreed that there is a lack of awareness about connectivity to Ward Pound Ridge. He hopes that with Moore's kiosk it will become “hard to miss.”
Scott was among those at the board's meeting. In a separate Town Board vote, he received board approval for an expansion of the Leon Levy Preserve's existing trail network.
The committee has oversight of town-owned parks and trails, Scott said.
