Studwell, Former Pound Ridge Pastor, Dies at 87

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. - Former Pound Ridge pastor, Rev. William A. Studwell, died Jan. 22 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 87.

Studwell served as pastor of the Pound Ridge Community Church for 10 years after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College and then Yale Divinity School.

Born May 27, 1923 in Greenwich, Conn., he was the eldest of five children of George Studwell and Marjorie Odell Studwell. He graduated with honors from Stamford High School in 1942 and entered Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. He enlisted in the Army after his freshman year though, serving from 1944 to 1946 in France with the 66th Infantry Division as an anti-tank gunner and interpreter.

He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret "Peggy" Worley on Sept. 3, 1946. His career spanned several states and countries. After serving as pastor in Pound Ridge, he moved to New Delhi, India as minister of the Union Church.

Studwell returned to the U.S. in 1965 and served the Methodist churches in Kingston, N.Y. and Pleasantville. After his first wife died in 1973, he married Barbara Richmond and they lived together in Pleasantville until moving to Florida to serve Methodist churches.

Most recently of Winter Park, Fla. and Silver Springs, Md., Studwell enjoyed golf, reading, politics and cinema in his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Studwell, his sisters Carol de la Torre and Judy Studwell Hunt, his daughters Cheryl Studwell Lazarodd of Tuscon, Ariz.,  Kathryn Studwell Sabino of Sherburne, N.Y. and Patricia Studwell Vaughan of Granger, Ind., his sons Thomas Studwell of New York City, Philip Studwell of Brunswick, Maine and David Studwell of Ithaca, N.Y., his stepson Clint Richmond of Brookline, Mass., his stepdaughters Donna Richmond Selden of Silver Springs, Md. and Gail Richmond Robinson of Midlothian, Va., 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
