POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Pound Ridge’s Marc Braun was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in the Boy Scout program, on March 17 at Conant Hall.
To attain the rank, a scout must first become a Life Scout, serve a period of six months in a role of leadership, earn a total of 21 merit badges, and complete a service project for the community.
To fulfill the community requirement, Braun designed and led the construction of a four bin composting unit at the newly refurbished Armstrong House, home of the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy’s Armstrong Education Center.
The construction materials alone cost over $1,000. To raise the money, Braun sold glow sticks at Pound Ridge’s annual July 4 fireworks celebration and solicited donations from Rings End Lumber in Vista.
He then led 20 volunteers in clearing and grading the land, digging post holes through the natural bedrock, pouring concrete and building the final structure. The project took several months to complete.
Braun began his scouting career with Cub Scout Pack 106 as a first-grader and was quickly enthralled with scouting, said his father, Craig Braun. Young Braun attended the Boy Scouts’ Camp Read in the Adirondacks for many summers, completed the National Youth Leadership Training program, and participated in Putnam County’s first Trail to Eagle program in 2011.
Along the way, Braun went to Costa Rica to work with local families and environmental organizations. Meanwhile, he managed to earn a total of 33 merit badges. If he reaches 36 before his 18th birthday, he will obtain a Silver Palm award. Now a senior at Fox Lane High School, Braun plans to study international business in college.
The Armstrong House, on Route 121 near the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, was built in 1912 and had been the home of American drama critic and author, John Corbin. Dr. Catherine Armstrong purchased it in 1961 and willed it to the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy upon her death, in 1999.
