Opinion: Pound Ridge Needs To Support People Of Syria

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- In the hours before writing this opinion article, I noticed two things. The recently infamous monster from Ohio who terrorized those three girls for ten years had taken his own life. Maybe while calling God to forgive him, he dialed the wrong number.

Then while dining at my favorite morning Pound Ridge eatery, I could not help but listen to the conversation at a nearby table. A couple was discussing how the situation in Syria was not America’s problem and that our President was right in delaying action against the Assad regime.

Perhaps 70 years ago a similar conversation took place here in town about a guy named Hitler and the way he was terrorizing the world and how isolationists were right in sticking their heads in the sand a few years earlier. Now that I think about it, I am confident that back then the people of Pound Ridge were a lot more patriotic than the isolationists.

What I do know about that part of history is a dozen members of my family were murdered when the Nazis used something on them called Zyklon B. The poison gas recently used on the Syrian people by their own government has been Sarin. Is there much difference between the two? I think not.

I hope over the next few days our President and his supporters will come to the realization that the words “change is good” should also apply to foreign policy. Maybe then Assad of Syria will be asking his people for forgiveness.

In the meantime, next week along with many relatives and friends, I will ask God to forgive me for any sins I committed in the past year – and in my humble way, will hope in the coming 365 days there is one less coal shovel with my name on it.

For those of you who are members of the Tribe, I wish you a most Happy New Year. For everyone else, I wish you a safe and enjoyable weekend. Be well, my friends.
