Lewisboro's Nancy L. Claus and Dana Ramos have written the handbook that walks young adults through everything from doing the laundry, cooking, job interviews and all of the other basics in life. The how-to guide is, naturally, called "The Basics of Everything" and recently became available at local bookstores and through Amazon's Kindle.
The book was inspired by years of experience helping their own kids start out on their own, said Claus.
"The kids used to call and say, 'Mom, what do I need to do this?' or 'how do I do that with the laundry?' and we thought, there needs to be handbook that has all of these answers," Claus said. "We kept getting all of these questions, so we would just add the answers to the book chapters at a time over many years."
Students struggling on their own and parents looking to get the kids out of their basements now have the answers they need in a new book "The Basics of Everything."
Because there are always new questions coming up on a daily basis, Claus and Ramos started a website so parents and students have a resource for all of those "basic" answers.
"It's constantly a work in progress and we are always adding to it but we can't just keep putting out new editions so the website always has the latest," Claus said. "It's also right there for anyone needing those quick answers."
While the original book was intended for students, it can also be a helpful guide for the newly divorced or anyone else starting out life on his/her own, Claus said.
“Whenever I mention the book to someone, the invariable response is ‘this would be perfect for my brother/sister/friend who just got divorced,’” said Claus in a press release. “So we increased the scope of the book to include that audience, including simple, but delicious recipes, easy party ideas, checklists for travel, even tips on emergency preparedness.”
The book has been an absolute necessity for Claus's daughter, Jessica Giles, who now lives in Brooklyn.
"My mom gave me this book as a housewarming gift when I moved into my new apartment,” said Giles in the release. “It's a quick read filled with lots of useful information, like how to do laundry without ruining everything you own, what to wear for a job interview, tips on finding apartments and inexpensive ideas for decorating them.”
