As a Democrat, I do not usually vote for Republicans, but as a voter, I always choose candidates who share my values and vision for my community. This is why on Tuesday, Nov. 4, I am voting for Dave Dow for Town Board. It does not take long after meeting Dave to realize why he is the right choice for Town Board: Dave is a dedicated and committed parent and an outstanding friend of Pound Ridge.

As a father, Dave is a wonderful example of how even a busy dad can be deeply and actively involved in his children’s education. Dave has a busy legal practice, yet he is one of the very few dads that I see at PRES either attending parent sessions with the principal, where he actively engages on issues such as state test scores or volunteering at many of the PTA activities where help from parents is always needed and much appreciated. Dave has actively supported numerous efforts in our town (Harvest Fest, PRIDE Day, Go Green Day, etc.), but his work to improve our local library has particularly impressed me.

As the head of the Pound Ridge Library Board, Dave demonstrated the leadership and courage to preside over a time of transformative changes at the library. The repairs and cleanup to the building and the programming enhancements will benefit our children for years to come, but they could not have been done without supporting the tax increase. I am sure many were not happy with the 17 percent library tax increase; however, Dave and the Library Board did what good leaders must – choose what is best for us in the long term even if it may seem unpopular in the moment.

Yes, perhaps a safer approach would have been to address expensive infrastructure needs over a number of years or perhaps address only some issues and ignore others and let future board members address them later on. I am glad that Dave and the board did not leave today’s problem to a future board.

Dave and his family are also investing directly in the future of Pound Ridge: When they found out that our local dance school was about to be shuttered, they made personal adjustments and purchased the school themselves, preventing another business from closing in town. My own daughters had been students at the school for three years, and we were dreading the thought of the school closing.

Thankfully, thanks to Dave and his family, my daughters can still fulfill their love for dance alongside many of their Pound Ridge friends, and we can still support our local economy.

Great communities do not just happen; they depend on the hard work and ideas of those willing and able to roll up their sleeves and get involved. I know Dave to be a compassionate and caring parent as well as a dedicated leader in our community who gets things done. I can think of no greater qualifications for election to our Town Board. I hope you will join me in voting for Dave Dow for Pound Ridge Town Board on Nov. 4.

Sincerely,  Nury Malpica
