Former Teacher Now Lifesaving Fitness Coach In Pound Ridge

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- Joanne Davis was such a believer in Curves fitness as a customer, she gave up her job in the Bronx to become an owner of one in Pound Ridge.

Davis bought into the franchise eight years ago and has been running the weight loss and fitness center in Scotts Corners ever since. "As a member, I was so impressed with the program and I lost 60 pounds," said Davis, a resident of Bedford Hills. "I recognized the benefits and saw how beneficial it was to women in the community. I wanted to be a part of that." Davis said good-bye to her job as an educator in the Bronx and hello to the world of fitness. While her audience may be different, Davis says the job hasn't changed all that much. "I'm still teaching," Davis said. "I'm setting up the environment and teaching people how to use the equipment. I'm also teaching my clients how to eat properly, watching their nutritional intake and how to stay on track to meet their goals." Davis has laid out a fitness program that includes 12 exercise machines. Customers go through the circuit twice, working every major muscle group in the body. "This is a 30-minute workout where you get aerobic and strength training," she said. "It's quick and fits a busy lifestyle. The machines are programed for a person's specific strength." Davis is not just the owner, but she acts as a coach, encouraging her clients to be the best they can be. "She has been great," said Laurence Furic of South Salem. "Joanne calls me to see if everything is OK and I'm accomplishing my goals. This has been a lifesaver for me. I was very depressed. I come daily and it has been so great for me."
