Artie Clark Moves Earth, And More, In Pound Ridge

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- A couple of years ago, I was fed up that the blades of my mower kept breaking, caused by the tips of rocks sticking out of my lawn. I decided to call AC&S Excavating, owned by Artie Clark, Pound Ridge resident and the expert on how to deal with such obstacles.

He convinced me the best way to get the job done was to bring in what is best described as one of his several real-life Tonka Toys. After a few hours of scooping out here and there, I found myself the proud owner of 40 something boulders the size of small European cars. Artie went as far as hauling most of them away, to be used in other jobs he had where they were needed.

AC&S was founded in 1953 by his grandfather, who was originally from North Stamford. A 1973 graduate of Fox Lane High School, Artie joined the family business soon after his grandfather died.

One of the specialties that makes Artie’s work very much in demand is his talent of setting large boulders to be used as retaining walls. Several Pound Ridge developments, including the Dann Farm Road subdivision have been transformed by AC&S.

The sidewalk in Scotts Corner is also a recent project in which AC&S was the primary contractor.

“What makes our business successful has been taking on responsibility of large projects,” Clark said. He also takes pride in the work his company has done when providing excavations for man-made ponds and stone- wall drainage projects.

AC&S is one of several well-known enterprises in Pound Ridge with a positive history. Artie’s son, Al, is now the fourth generation to be involved in the family business.

As for the project I hired AC&S for, the end result is a beautiful backyard which has increased our property value.
