Although Andrus’s term as “designated” pastor was a three-year appointment, the congregation has been so encouraged by his leadership that they decided to offer him the permanent position after just two years.

“Chip is working tirelessly to make the church the center of our community, and he’s doing a very good job,” said Church Elder Doug Findlay. “Under his ministry, we are on the road to a larger, stronger and involved congregation, as well as a greatly improved financial picture. We are very fortunate to have Chip at the helm.” The size of the congregation has tripled since Andrus’s arrival.

Before coming to South Salem, Andrus had been Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. Upon arriving in South Salem he plunged right into his church duties and also volunteered to act as Chaplain to the South Salem Fire Department, as well as becoming a charter member and organizer of the Domestic Abuse Network of Northeast Westchester, working with other local clergy, law enforcement, advocacy groups and domestic abuse shelters.

“Chip’s ministry expresses a loving concern for everyone, and is accomplished with warmth and without pomposity,” said church member Billye Zoa Steinnagel.

In between his hours of ministry, Andrus is a professional musician and songwriter. He performs regularly at South Salem’s Horse & Hound restaurant, in combination with violinist Vince Castellucci.

The South Salem Presbyterian Church, at 111 Spring Street, was founded in 1752 and has been serving the people of South Salem ever since. It is the final resting place of 27 Revolutionary War soldiers.
