We went to the experts: Brendan Carroll and Doug Cedrone, owners of Beer Noggin in Bronxville, for their suggestions. The following are their top five brews for this time of year -- food pairings included.

  • Holy Mountain - The Goat. Rustic Brett Saison. 4.7% ABV. 750 ml bottle. An extremely drinkable farmhouse ale brewed with barley, rye, oats, and wheat. This beer is fermented in oak with a special mix of yeasts that makes it funky, fruity, and dry. We smell hay, peaches, apple, and some peppercorn. A wonderful replacement for champagne or sparkling cider at the dinner table during the holidays. Food Pairing: Funky Cheeses, Nuts & Berries, Roasted Turkey.
  • Von Trapp - Dunkel Lager. German Dunkel. 5.7% ABV. 12 oz bottle. One of our favorite representations of the style, Von Trapp’s Dunkel is the perfect balance between malt sweetness and hops. Munich malts give us hints cocoa, roasted malt, and bread crust. A nice and slow lager fermentation makes this beer super clean and crisp. Drink this with your uncle who loves Yuengling and he will be a very happy man. Food Pairing: Sausages, Roasted Veggies, Carrot Cake.
  • Drie Fonteinen - Oude Geuze. Blended Lambic Beer Aged in Oak. 6% ABV. 12.7% oz bottle. A blend of 1, 2, and 3 year old ale fermented in oak w/ wild yeast and bacteria. Re-fermentation in the bottle produces a brisk, champagne-like carbonation. This beer is extremely complex with layers of funk, sharp acidity, and fruit. A truly magical and rare experience, pop this bad boy with your super beer-geek cousin or your Mom who only drinks white wine. Everyone should enjoy this style at least once! Food Pairing: Tangy & Stinky cheeses, Belgian mussels, Creamy sauces.
  • Barrier - The Hills Have Hops. Double IPA. 8.3% ABV. 16.9 oz bottle. A juicy double IPA from our friends at Barrier Brewing. This unfiltered hop bomb throws off notes of pine resin, dankness, and citrus. First sip echoes the nose with bitter pine, tropical fruit, and some dank hop tones. This one is assertive and absolutely delicious. Cheers! Food Pairing: Spicy dishes, Sharp Cheddar, Blue Cheese.
  • Singlecut - Heavy Boots of Lead. Imperial Stout. 11% ABV. 16.9 oz bottle. A bold and beautiful imperial stout rife with notes of deep roasted coffee, cocoa, brownie batter, and vanilla. Don’t let the high ABV scare you, this beer is super complex and a very special treat to share with friends and family. Pour yourself a small glass and let the luscious liquid warm you from the inside out. Food Pairing: Steak, Foie Gras, Sweet Desserts.
