POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- From the unobservable to the natural, science illustrators from all over Westchester will display their works at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

“Habitats: Flora and Fauna in Natural Settings,” an exhibition of art by members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators’ Greater New York Chapter, will hold an artists' reception for the public from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation at the intersection of Routes 35 and 121 South in Cross River.

"The exhibit showcases the members’ paintings, drawings and mixed media works," representatives said in a press release. "Founded at the Smithsonian Institution in 1968, the Guild is a nonprofit organization that serves the needs of people either employed or genuinely interested in the field of natural science illustration."

Science illustration is a lot more than painting nature, GNSI representatives said.

"As art reflects culture, scientific illustration reflects the findings of science and technology," according to the GNSI Handbook of Science Illustration. "Scientific illustration takes the viewer to the often unobservable — from molecules and viruses to the universe, from depiction of the internal anatomy of arthropods and plants to geologic cross sections and reconstruction of extinct life forms, ranging from realistic to abstract portrayal. Shapes, anatomy, details and concepts that cannot be conveyed with words form the essence of this art."

“Habitats: Flora and Fauna in Natural Settings” will run through Sept. 3.

The GNSI Greater New York Chapter meets regularly at the New York Botanical Garden and at other tri-state locations. The meetings often feature lectures, demonstrations, workshops and field trips, as well as opportunities for group exhibitions. For more on the GNSI, residents are asked to visit the group's webpage .

For more information on the exhibit at Ward Pound Ridge, residents are asked to visit the Parks and Recreation website or call (914) 864-PARK.
