POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – The Pound Ridge Garden Club has announced all the winners for its biennial Flower Show, which was held earlier this month at Conant Hall.
Judy Kennedy, with an intricate vertical design commemorating the Chinese Year of the Snake and Annie Thom, with a combination planting of succulents in varying shades of green, were the big winners. Kennedy received the top award in the design category and Thom won the top award for a horticultural exhibit. Kennedy also won the Designer’s Choice Award and Collector's Showcase Award, and Thom received a Grower’s Choice Award.
Titled, “If Only Every Day Were A Holiday…,” the show featured artistically arranged flowers celebrating holidays throughout the year, as well as horticultural specimens. More than 150 visitors viewed the displays, which, in the design category, were themed for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Columbus Day, Halloween and the Chinese Lunar New Year.
“Pound Ridge Garden Club members are renowned for the artistry of their designs,” said Barbara Mayer, a member of the Garden Club’s publicity committee. “Past shows have garnered awards at both the regional and national levels.”
The event is judged by independent, outside judges and because of the amount of work that goes into producing the show, it’s only held every two years.
Gail Edwards organized horticultural exhibits at this year's show, and Susan Lee was the overall chair.
Other major award winners were: Carole Long, Table Artistry Award for a Valentine’s Day-themed table for two; Denise Wade, Grower’s Choice Award, foliage container-grown plants other than cacti and succulents; Barbara Mayer, Merit Award, annuals; Virginia Todar, Merit Award for perennials, Joan Goldberg, Merit Award, vegetables; Carol Cioppa, Arboreal Award, branches; and Irene Mulligan, Merit Award, cacti and other succulents.
In the youth category, featuring bowl designs on the theme, Mardi Gras Under the Sea, Abby Bartlett won in the juniors category (ages 5 to 8) and Nicole Napoli won in the intermediate category (ages 9 to 12).
