POUND RIDGE, N. Y. -- Happy Birthday to Pound Ridge's Ari Fleischer.

Pound Ridge native Fleischer, the former White House press secretary to President George W. Bush, turned 57 Friday.

Former press secretary to several Republican candidates and office-holders, Lawrence Ari Fleischer was born Oct. 13, 1960, to Martha, and Alan Fleischer.

These days, Fleischer works in sports media, representing various organizations and athletes. Past clients include Tiger Woods, Mark McGwire, and the Green Bay Packers.

His company Ari Fleischer Sports Communications is based in White Plains.

A graduate of Fox Lane High School in Bedford and Middlebury College in Vermont, Fleischer got his start as press secretary for Jon Fossel, a Republican running for Congress from New York. In 1985, he worked as the field director for the National Republican Congressional committee before going back to being a press secretary in 1988.

He worked as deputy communications director for George H.W. Bush's 1992 re-election campaign and as communications director for Elizabeth Dole's 2000 presidential bid. Then he joined the younger Bush after Dole dropped out of the race.

After Bush's election, Fleischer became Bush's first press secretary until he left the job in 2003.

In 2005, Fleischer published a memoir titled, "Taking Heat: The President, the Press and My Years in the White House." He was portrayed by Rob Corddry in Oliver Stone's 2008 film "W."
