Celebrated Pound Ridge Jazz Pianist To Perform at SUNY Purchase

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Pound Ridge resident and renowned jazz pianist Pete Malinverni will perform at Purchase College, SUNY, on July 12. His show will feature a recital and a lecture on jazz improvisation.

Malinverni is the incoming director of jazz studies at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music. His free recital and lecture is titled "What's Going on Up There?" and will demonstrate the elements of improvised jazz using some of his original compositions as well as those of Thelonious Monk and George Gershwin. It’s part of the school’s Summer Piano series.

"Summer Piano provides a special opportunity for the Westchester community to experience the great musical talent at Purchase College," said Suzanne Farrin, director of the college's Conservatory of Music. "Based on the overwhelming popularity of past concerts, we plan to continue offering free piano performances throughout the fall and spring."

Since he came to New York in 1981, Malinverni, who also serves as music director of the Pound Ridge Community Church, has performed at legendary venues such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, the Village Vanguard, and the Blue Note. He has toured in North and South America, Europe and Japan.

Malinverni served as minister of music at the Devoe Street Baptist Church in Brooklyn from 1992 to 2010. He is the pianist/conductor of the Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale and has served as professor on the jazz faculties of New York University and of William Paterson University in New Jersey.

The program is free and open to the public, and will be held from 8-10 p.m. at the Music Conservatory Recital Hall at Purchase College, SUNY, 735 Anderson Hill Road, in Purchase. For more information, call (914) 251-6700 or visit www.purchase.edu.
