Born In 'The City Of Blades' Wusthof Has Withstood The Test Of Time

NORWALK, Conn. -- Cut, forged and crafted in Solingen, Germany, Wusthof has produced knives and other high-quality steel products for over 200 years. Nicknamed, “The City of Blades,” Solingen has helped Wusthof maintain their international reputation as a leader in the culinary world.

Located in Western Germany near the banks of the Wupper River, Solingen has been home to master blacksmiths for over 2,000 years. The many creeks and spillways of the river were perfectly suited to provide power for the production of blades in the 18th and 19th centuries, a tradition which continues today.

Upholding standards set over two centuries ago, the family owned business prides itself on superior craftsmanship and careful attention to detail, which has allowed Wusthof to operate three production facilities in Germany and an outlet store in Norwalk.

“Wusthof Outlet Store is much more than a place to buy knives,” said Andrea Arnold, manager of the German knife maker's Connecticut outlet store. “We offer knife sharpening, education classes, guest speakers and much more."

Wusthof’s Norwalk location opened in 2014 and is their only outlet store in the United States. Although relatively new to the country, Wusthof began selling crafted steel products in 1814 when the “Factory For Fine Steel Wares” opened its doors to the public in Solingen. Today, owner Harald Wusthof is the seventh generation to manage the company out of the famous German riverside town.

“The Wusthof family has honored traditions for hundreds of years,” said Arnold. “They still produce quality steel products in Solingen, just as blacksmiths have done in that city for years and years.”

Wusthof continues to call the picturesque city of Solingen its home and proudly marks each blade with, “Made in Solingen.”
