Pound Ridge Library To Hold First Community Read

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – The Pound Ridge Library is wrapping up its yearlong 60th anniversary celebration with a communitywide reading of the Anne Tyler novel “Digging to America,” which will be followed up with a panel discussion next month.

To mark its 60 years of service to the community, the library has been hosting a series of community-enhancement projects called “Building Together/Growing Together.” The six events, scheduled throughout the year, have focused on community, civility and compassion through film presentations, readings and discussions.

The final event in the series is the community read and subsequent panel discussion, which the library has titled “Cultivating Compassion: Learning Compassion Through Understanding Others.”

Those wishing to participate should read “Digging to America” in time for the Oct. 11 panel discussion, to be held at the library at 7:30 p.m. Copies of the book are available at the library. The discussion will be led by the Rev. Lori Miller of the Pound Ridge Community Church, Rabbi Carla Freedman of the Jewish Family Congregation and Deacon Louis Santore of St. Patrick’s Parish. In addition to discussing the book itself, “Digging to America” will serve as a springboard for discussing the event’s theme, Learning Compassion Through Understanding Others.

“I am excited about this event – it will be the town’s first community read” said Library Director Marilyn Tinter. “Many communities have had successful communitywide reading events, bringing the entire community together to enjoy and discuss a thought-provoking book.”

Tinter said the library’s goal is to have as much community involvement as possible, and she hopes the town’s myriad civic organizations will encourage their members to participate.

“Everyone is invited to take part in this special community first,” she said. “It’s an event with great potential.”

Registration is recommended for the panel discussion. Call the library at 914-764-5085 or visit www.poundridgelibrary.org to learn more.
