The courses will be on a wide variety of subjects and will be presented by scholars from many of the major universities in the United States.

This program, the first of its kind in the country, is designed to provide a collegial, small-group setting for courses that 'you didn't get a chance to take in college, but wanted to.' The subject matter of the seminars is quite extensive and delves into, for example, history, art, religion, science, linguistics and more. This series of seminars, designed and moderated by Lawrence Brotmann of Pound Ridge, consists of a series of four 30-minute lectures, given weekly, usually for periods of three to 12 weeks per course.

Since each lecture will include group discussions, the size of the group will be limited. The 10th of these DVD seminars, “The Secret Life of Words,” will be given by Professor Anne Curzan of the University of Michigan, from 1-3 p.m. Thursdays (with discussion following) through March 19. The remaining courses for the 2014-2015 series (dates to be announced) are “The Medieval World” and “Introduction to Genealogy.”

Future courses will include “History of the English Language,” “Lost Christianities: Battle for Authentication,” “Joy of Mathematics,” “The French Revolution,” “Comparative Religion,” “Big History.” All the seminars will be at the Pound Ridge Library's Schaffner Room. Light refreshments will be served. The seminars are free but registration is recommended.

The library is at 271 Westchester Ave., Pound Ridge. For more information, call the library at (914) 764-5085 or visit the library’s website at www.poundridgelibrary.org. To register, contact the library by phone or through email at hhml@wlsmail.org.
