Beginning in 2011, President Barack Obama declared January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.
“Human trafficking has even occurred right here in idyllic Pound Ridge,” said Ali Boak, a Pound Ridge resident and co-founder and president of the International Organization for Adolescents. “Our community is not immune to human trafficking. In the past five years, hundreds of people have been trafficked in Westchester County, many of them children."
“As a community resource center, it is exceptionally appropriate for the library to be actively involved in the endeavor to raise public awareness,'' said Marilyn Tinter, Pound Ridge Library director.
The opening event will include remarks by Boak and Pound Ridge Police Chief David Ryan regarding their efforts to combat human trafficking in Pound Ridge.
“Human trafficking is a horrific crime,” says Susan Grissom, director of the Lionheart Gallery and a participating artist in the show. “When Ali Boak asked me to participate in the show, I called a friend who had created a painting for an exhibit in Singapore to benefit trafficking victims. She agreed to let us use her image, entitled 'Hope is What Lies Ahead,' as the symbol for this show as it artfully expresses a victim's prayer for hope”.
Participating artists include John Bria, Johnny Dauer, Sally Green, Susan Grissom, Gail Jankus, Curtis Lew, Kimberly Petts, Carolee Rainey, and Geoffrey Stein. Gabriel Rainey, a Pound Ridge resident and junior at Fox Lane High School, will perform on the cello.
