Water Main Break Slows Traffic In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – A water main break has slowed traffic in Yonkers and will likely cause delays in the evening commute.

A water main broke Monday afternoon in the vicinity of McLean Avenue and the Saw Mill River Parkway, flooding the parkway and forcing officials to close a portion of the road, Westchester County officials said.

Cars heading south were being diverted at the Rumsey Road exit in Yonkers, county officials said. Traffic has backed up the westbound Cross County Parkway and forced officials to begin diverting cars onto Central Park Avenue, officials said.

“The best advice at moment is to try to avoid that entire area,” Westchester County Police spokesperson Kieran O’Leary said. “It’s causing a lot of traffic congestion, and it's likely only to get worse as rush hour approaches.”

Many businesses and homes in the area have been left with no water or low water pressure, officials said. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is expected to give an update on the condition of the water main break at 3:30 p.m.
