'Art Show: Bedford' Returns To St. Matthew’s; Benefits Local Charities

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The 41st Annual "Art Show: Bedford" will take place in St. Matthew’s Fellowship Hall from Jan. 24-26, benefiting many local charities.

The Preview Party on Friday, Jan. 24, is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and will include champagne and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets for the reception are $125 in advance and $150 art the door. Proceeds will go to charities supported by the Women of St. Matthew’s.

Admission is free otherwise. The display will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Curated by Susan Grissom, gallery director at the Lionheart Gallery in Pound Ridge, and St. Matthew's parishioner Leslie Henshaw of Waccabuc, the show will again feature contemporary art, sculpture and photography from local artists.

A children’s activity to create watercolor bookmarks, organized by artist Denise Minnerly, will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. She will also bring copies of her children’s books for a book-signing.

On Sunday, artist Kathleen Griffin will be present from noon to 3 p.m., explaining and selling drawings of her public art project, “Butterflies of Memory,”

The installation involves mounting giant gold butterflies atop the ruins of the Small Pox Hospital on Roosevelt Island, a scene that will be visible to millions of New Yorkers.

An exhibit of her work is ongoing through Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Lionheart Gallery in Pound Ridge. "Art Show: Bedford" is the major annual fundraising event sponsored by the Women of St. Matthew’s Church. Through the years, it has helped people in the community by donating Art Show earnings to about 21 charities each year.

The church is at 382 Cantitoe St. (Route 22) in Bedford. For more information, call the church office at 914-234-9636, or visit its website.
