POUND RIDGE, N.Y. When Pound Ridges Rainer Hibler was just nine years old, she decided she wanted make her own money.
Thats extremely hard when youre nine, said Hibler, now 13. Youre too young to babysit.
She may have been too young to babysit, but the aspiring entrepreneur was plenty old enough to design and create her own jewelry. She had an aunt who dabbled in the hobby and taught Hibler some of the basics.
My aunt is an art teacher and she was cleaning out her studio and gave me some of her old beads and things to help get me started, Hibler said. She gave me the foundation.
At the time, Hibler and her family were living in New Jersey and she was fortunate enough to have a jewelry designer in her neighborhood. Hibler took a class and was soon creating her own jewelry, selling it to friends and at a local co-op. She used those proceeds to invest in more high-end components such as pearls.
On Labor Day, Hibler opened her own booth at Pound Ridges Antiques & Farmers Holiday Market.
I am just starting to get professional and going to shows like this, she said. There are a lot more markets that Id like to go to.
Hibler said that so far the business has been a bit up and down, with some good months and bad months. While most of her pieces sell for between $30 and $50, she recently sold a necklace for $225 and believes that her business is finally beginning to take off. She has plans to create her own website and if that generates enough business, she says she may hire people to help her fill the orders.
I want to do this as a career long-term, Hibler said. Eventually, I would like to open my own store here in Pound Ridge. Its a really nice town and Im glad I moved here.
