POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Mother-daughter team, Deidre Lane and Caitlin Shapiro always thought it would be fun to go into business together. “Then one day we were in a shop that sold loose tea in the City and we got the idea to open our own,” said Lane.

Though they live in New Canaan, “we’ve always loved Scotts Corners,” she continued, “so we were thrilled to find the old Scofield barn, which actually used to be a teashop a century ago.”

“We both have corporate backgrounds,” Lane explained. “I was a real estate agent for Sotheby’s and my daughter works in advertising on Madison Avenue. We wanted to work for each other and not anybody else.”

Betty’s Tea Shop will offer a broad selection of loose leaf teas, including green teas, black teas, chai, oolong, rooibos, mate, pu’erh and a variety of caffeine-free herbal teas.

Though both the owners gave up caffeine a few years ago, the shop will also sell five varieties of coffee, including dark roast and decaf. To accompany your beverage, there will be fresh croissants, muffins, cookies, and scones from the kitchen of local baker, Liz Larkin.

Caramels from Vermont’s Big Picture Farm, where specialties include goat milk caramels, will be on the shelves, along with local honey, artisanal pasta, an assortment of creams and lotions, soy-based candles, and more.

“People are calling me Betty,” Lane confided, “but Betty was the name of our old dog who was an absolute soul-mate. She lived to be 18. We got her at the pound for $5. She died 10 years ago, but we always wanted to name something after her.”

Betty has a special corner in the shop where eco-friendly dog bowls and local dog treats are available for your best friend, or if you are really lucky, your canine soul-mate.

Betty’s Tea Shop is at 24 Westchester Avenue in Scotts Corners, Pound Ridge. (914) 764-3444. The hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. The shop will be closed on Mondays.
